Plug-in hybrid Although not as efficient and eco-friendly as an EV, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) offers a huge improvement on a purely combustion-engined equivalent. For instance, the Kia Sportage PHEV returns up to 252mpg while producing CO2 emissions as low as 25g/km – and it offers an all-electric range of 43 miles. PHEVs are equipped with a regular engine and an electric motor, the latter of which is powered by a battery, which requires manual charging.

Hybrid If you’re looking to dip your toes into the electrified car market without wading in too deeply, a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) offers an elegant solution. An HEV features a similar set up to a PHEV. The main difference is that the battery is self-charging (which occurs via regenerative braking), and most HEVs are unable to run purely on electric power. However, an HEV is more efficient and produces fewer emissions than an equivalent vehicle powered solely by a combustion engine.

Electric An electric vehicle (EV) is the cleanest, most efficient form of motor car, producing zero CO2 emissions while being very affordable to run. EVs are powered by an electric motor which is provided energy by a high-capacity battery. You can charge the battery at home, at work or at one of several thousand public access points located all around the UK. EVs attract the lowest Vehicle Excise Duty rates and are exempt from Clean Air Zone charges.
