Plug-in hybrid Although not as efficient and eco-friendly as an EV, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) offers a huge improvement on a purely combustion-engined equivalent. For instance, the Kia Sportage PHEV returns up to 252mpg while producing CO2 emissions as low as 25g/km – and it offers an all-electric range of 43 miles. PHEVs are equipped with a regular engine and an electric motor, the latter of which is powered by a battery, which requires manual charging.
Electric An electric vehicle (EV) is the cleanest, most efficient form of motor car, producing zero CO2 emissions while being very affordable to run. EVs are powered by an electric motor which is provided energy by a high-capacity battery. You can charge the battery at home, at work or at one of several thousand public access points located all around the UK. EVs attract the lowest Vehicle Excise Duty rates and are exempt from Clean Air Zone charges.

      What is an electric car?

Unlike a combustion-engined vehicle, an electric car is powered purely by electricity. The car’s electric motor is provided energy by a battery, which can easily be charged at home, at work or out and about. Electric cars are very affordable to run and extremely eco-friendly.

      What is a hybrid car?

A hybrid car harnesses the combined power of fuel and electricity, and while it’s similar to a regular combustion-engined vehicle, it’s more efficient and produces fewer emissions.

      Do electric cars have gears?

Electric cars employ a single-gear system.

Are electric cars manual or automatic?

All electric cars feature automatic transmission.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

It depends on the electric car in question. Using the Kia EV6 as an example, charging times take approximately:

      • 54 minutes – with a 50 kW public connector (20% to 80%)
      • 11.1 hours – via a dedicated 7 kW home charger (0% to 100%)
      • 25.8 hours – using a 3 kW three-pin power source (0% to 100%)

How much does it cost to run an electric car?

Again, using the Kia EV6 as an example, it costs roughly:

      • £21 – with a 50 kW public charger (20% to 80%)
      • £26 – using a dedicated 7 kW home charger or regular 3 kW domestic power supply (0% to 100%)
